Dennis (Mac) McQuain, born on August 14, 1953, in Charleston, West Virginia, passed away on April 19, 2026, in his beloved hometown. A man whose life was as vast and vibrant as his spirit, Dennis was a towering figure known for his unwavering dedication to his faith, his family, and the communities he cherished. His passing leaves an indelible void in the hearts of all who knew him, yet his legacy of love, laughter, and service continues to inspire.

Dennis’s journey was marked by accomplishments that reflected his multifaceted talents and deep commitments. After graduating from Herbert Hoover High School, he pursued his calling at East Coast Bible College, completing his studies in 1985 after his first enlistment. His dedication to service extended beyond the spiritual realm, evidenced by his honorable discharges from both the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard, where he served with pride from 1971 to 1993.

A skilled craftsman and devoted laborer, Dennis was a proud member of the Carpenters Union, and worked as an independent contractor and ASE Certified Mechanic. He found great joy in building hot rods and racing, passions that spoke to his love for creation and speed. Known affectionately as "Big Fish," he delighted in sharing his mechanical prowess and wisdom, teaching others with patience and enthusiasm.

Dennis’s heart beat strongly for his faith and community. As an associate pastor, he was beloved for his larger-than-life personality—his laughter, jokes, and heartfelt teachings enriched those around him. He was never lukewarm in his convictions, tirelessly advancing the rights of the Native American people as President of the West Virginia Native American Coalition (WNAMCO), proudly honoring his Native American heritage. His relationship with tribal elder Grandpa Charlie and Jan and his love for the Native American community were core parts of his identity.

Beyond his professional and community roles, Dennis was a man who treasured simple, joyful moments. He shared a unique bond with his family, especially his "Lovely Bride" Esther and his son Joshua, of whom he was immensely proud. His grandchildren—Eli, Emma Kate, and Rhett—brought him endless happiness, as did the presence of his sister Kimberly and a large extended family including Angi Kerns and her family, Amber and Phil’s family, and Joe and his children who enriched his life.

Those closest to Dennis fondly recall his humor and passions—from the ritual of date nights that invariably included a trip to Lowe’s, to playing in the river at Coonskin, to the soulful tunes drawn from his harmonica. He was known for sharing Dad jokes with a twinkle in his eye, always learning new ones to brighten someone’s day. His love for dancing and live music added rhythm to his life, infusing joy into every gathering, as did his "Papaw stories".

Dennis aspired to be a better man in his latter years than in his former, a testament to his humility and lifelong dedication to growth. He left behind not just memories, but lessons of kindness, faith, and strength. Every person he met came away a better person because of him.

There will be a Memorial Service celebrating Dennis’s life and legacy on May 9, 2026, from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM at Highlawn Baptist Church, located at 2304 Jefferson Ave, St Albans, WV 25177. This will be an opportunity to honor a man who lived fully and loved deeply, whose spirit will forever echo in the lives he touched.

Dennis Gene McQuain and Ruthann McQuain, his parents, preceded him in death. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Esther McQuain; his son Joshua McQuain (and Lacy); his sister Kimberly McQuain; "Papaw Dentist"  to grandchildren Eli, Emma Kate, and Rhett; and was "Papa Bear" to "Lovely Daughter" Angi Kerns (Chris) and "Poppy" to Westley and Zoe "Mattie"; Amber (Phil), "Grandpa Dennis" to Christopher, Alex; Joe, Arianna, Heaven, and Harper.

Dennis (Mac) McQuain’s was a life well-lived—a testimony of faith, determination, humor, and an enduring love that will continue to inspire and uplift all who had the privilege to know him. May his soul rest in peace, embraced by the same love and grace he so freely shared with the world.
