Hugh Porter Speakman, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on February 5, 2026, in Charlotte, NC, at the age of 80. Born on June 30, 1945, in Wilmington, Delaware, Porter dedicated his life to service, both professionally and personally, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A graduate of the University of Delaware with a BA in Accounting, Porter began his career in business with E.I. Dupont, where he laid the foundation for a life defined by diligence and integrity. However, after receiving Jesus as his Lord and Savior, it was his calling as a Missions Pastor at Central Church of God that truly showcased his generous spirit. Over the span of 23 years, he traveled to over 60 countries, working with more than 90 ministries, fostering connections and uplifting communities across the globe. His journey continued as he served at Carmel Baptist Church until 2016, and later made a warm impact at Novant Main Hospital in Guest Services for outpatient surgeries until 2026. Additionally, Porter was known to volunteer at the USO in the Charlotte airport, welcoming those in need with his kindness and empathy.
Porter's dedication to serving others extended to his military service as well. He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War as an Aviation Fire Control Technician and achieved the distinction of being the first Petty Officer to qualify as Plane Captain for the A7E Corsair II aircraft on the East Coast. His commitment to service was unmatched and exemplified his strong moral character.
A devoted family man, Porter shared 56 ½ years of marriage with his beloved wife, Joanne Speakman. Together, they nurtured a loving home for their three children: Porter Speakman Jr., Ashley Speakman, and Brett Speakman and daughter-in-laws Hana Speakmanova and Amber Speakman. As a father, he was a source of wisdom and guidance, always offering good counsel. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Jakub Speakman, Harrington Speakman, Emma Speakman, and Aidan Speakman, who will carry forward the values he instilled in them.
Porter's personality was a tapestry of warmth and humor; he embraced everyone he met with open arms. His ability to connect with others made even strangers feel at ease, creating bonds that transcended words. Family and friends will forever cherish memories of Porter’s laughter and the generous spirit he exhibited in sharing his time and resources.
Porter was preceded in death by his parents, John Ashbridge Speakman and Margaret Porter Speakman, and his siblings, John Ashbridge Speakman Jr. and Jill Stabler. Though they are departed, their memories will forever be cherished in the hearts of those he loved.
Though he has left this Earth, Porter Speakman's legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to service will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered.
The Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 am on February 28, 2026 at Carmel Baptist Church (1145 Pineville-Matthews Rd, Matthews, NC 28105). Visitation will follow the service.
