Ira Dexter Austin, 81, of Indian Trail went to be with his savior Jesus Christ on May 4, 2022. He leaves behind his loving wife of 49 years, Marie Moore Austin; son Brad Austin; daughter Kendra Brucke (Kevin); Grandsons, Garret and Colton; Sister in-law Carolyn; niece Melanie Somers (Doug); Nephew Brian Austin (Anna). He is preceded in death by his parents Robert Lee and Verla Austin; brother Craven Austin.

Ira was a devoted, loving and caring man. He was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church in Fairview, North Carolina. When Ira was born his parents already were members of Hopewell Baptist Church so Ira literally grew up in the church. He continued there throughout his life and served as an usher and a greeter. The children loved seeing him at church when he was working those positions. It seemed to be because of Ira’s height. He wasn’t a very tall man and so the children would relate to him. Ira also served as volunteer fireman at the Fairview Fire Department for many years. He enjoyed spectating all sports but watching his grandsons baseball games was his favorite. Ira wasn’t the loudest cheerleader but he was the greatest supporter anyone could ever have. Ira treated all people the same no matter their walk of life. He a had a kind heart that just loved other people. It did not matter where you came from or what you looked liked, that just wasn’t a factor in that love. Ira served proudly served our country in our the military for a total of 34 years. First the Army and then he joined the Air National Guard.  Ira was also a proud member of American Legion in Unionville, NC. 

A visitation has been scheduled for May 10, 2022 at Hopewell Baptist Church at the Legacy campus starting at 1:00 pm. The funeral service will follow and will begin at 2:00 pm. Interment will be private.
