John D. Pennell, 77, of Charlotte, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2013, at home. He loved dogs, his companion Janey, his sister, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and golf - not necessarily in that order. Dad was an accomplished chef, having owned two restaurants and was always willing to share a recipe with anyone who asked. He rarely had an unkind word for anyone, and when he did, he said it in such a way that you didn't realize he was being unkind. He believed in speaking the plain truth and valued honor in your words and deeds. He was a true southern gentleman If you were lucky enough to know him, you had a friend for life. In the last days of his life, he was so grateful to visit with so many of his friends who dropped by to say their goodbyes - and their comments always ended with "I love him like a brother". -
