Joe "Kelton" Nance, from Charlotte, died at the age of 83 on November 23rd, after a short battle with cancer. Kelton will be remembered for his hospitality, love for neighbors and strong work ethic. Kelton was born on March 11th, 1941 and grew up in Marshville, North Carolina.
As a boy, he spent his days working on the family farm and many of those lessons carried forward into his life. Kelton served in the Army and attended Bowling Green Business University. Most of his working career, he worked at Moss Supply Company as an accountant. Kelton is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Ozeal, his sister, Velma, and the love of his life, Susan.
Kelton and Susan were married for 39 years and enjoyed running a business, socializing and traveling together. One of his favorite stories to tell is how he and Susan shared the same birth day. They have many dear friends. Together, they had the gift of hospitality and their home was always open! Whether it was dropping by to say hello, borrow one of his many tools or enjoy a glass of wine, Kelton always made everyone feel welcomed.
Kelton was an amazing, self-taught woodworker. He built the two story deck behind their home. Many friends have one of his benches or one of his wine bottle walls in their gardens.
Kelton loved his role as grandfather of seven and great-grandfather to one. Kelton is survived by his daughter, Shannon Collins and son-in-law, Mark; his grandchildren, Elijah, Macall (Jeff), Brynn, Nathan, Hudson, Beza and Addia: and great grandson, Mills Bennett.
A small celebration of life will take place at his home. Donations can be made to Hospice of VIA Health Partners (7845 Little Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28226). The Nance family is in the care of Stephenson & Gaskin Funeral Service of Matthews.
