Jack Haynes

April 10, 1945 — May 27, 2023

Born in Brooklyn, New York on April 10th, 1945 to John B. and Marie Haynes, Jack is a beloved husband, brother, father, and grandfather. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics, magna cum laude. For the Fighting Irish, he captained a record-breaking fencing team. He also earned a Master of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University.

He went on to work for Niagara Mohawk in their IT department. He was an early adopter of the personal computer, and purchased an Apple II for his household. Instead of mindless Atari games, his kids were given copies of Byte Magazine so they could learn BASIC programming. All three of them fell for it and followed him into the information technology profession.

Jack was an avid train fan, and was an active member of a local group of model railroad enthusiasts. He attended weekly meetups where he and his fellow conductors would ensure that cargo safely reached its destination on the other side of the room.

Another hobby of his was gardening. Kneeling in the dirt with a trowel in his hand and bucket hat on his head, he was a neighborhood fixture in his front yard. There, perhaps using his skills as a swordsman, he defended the plants from the attacks of crafty squirrels.

As an integral member of a local restaurant trivia team, he handled any and all science-related questions. His knowledge of theoretical physics was an inspiration to his grandchildren, who would often ask him questions about how the universe worked.

Jack Haynes is survived by his wife, Marianne; his sister, Mary; his three children, Cathleen, Michael (M. Michael Matthews), and Jeffrey (Michelle Trager); his grandchildren, Cameron, Connor, Madeline, Fiona, Elodie, and Harry; and a niece and nephews.
