Matthew William O'Neil was born on April 2, 1983, in Burlington, Vermont, to Mary O'Neil and the late William O'Neil. Surrounded by the love of his family, Matthew peacefully passed away on August 2, 2026, at Novant Health Matthews.

To know Matthew was to know someone whose mind was always searching, learning, creating, and imagining. Those who loved him often affectionately described him as "a huge nerd with a big heart," a title he would have gladly accepted. His curiosity about the world was endless, and he approached life with an intellect that was matched only by his compassion for others. Matthew had a lifelong love for comic books, fantasy worlds, and storytelling. He found countless hours of joy exploring the adventures of The Legend of Zelda, where courage, wisdom, and kindness reflected many of the values he admired in life. His love of music was equally profound. Whether creating music or simply enjoying it, he found in it a language capable of expressing emotions words sometimes could not.

An avid reader, Matthew was especially fascinated by science and the mysteries of the universe. He had an insatiable desire to understand how the world worked and eagerly consumed books that challenged his thinking and expanded his perspective. His love for writing eventually led him to become a published author, an accomplishment of which he was quietly proud.

While Matthew possessed an extraordinary intellect, those closest to him knew that his greatest gift was his heart. Nothing mattered more to him than his family. His wife and children were the center of his universe, and every decision he made was rooted in the love he had for them. He treasured every moment they shared and found his greatest purpose in being a devoted husband and father.

Matthew was deeply thoughtful and gravitated toward people who loved meaningful conversations, lifelong learning, and intellectual curiosity. He believed that growth never ended and was passionate about becoming a better adult religious educator, a calling he embraced with sincerity and conviction. Helping others explore faith, ask difficult questions, and deepen their understanding was work that brought him tremendous fulfillment.

Among the many writers and thinkers who inspired him, Carl Sagan held a special place in Matthew's heart. Two quotations, in particular, reflected how he viewed life and the legacy he hoped to leave behind:

"Who are we, if not measured by our impact on others? That's who we are! We're not who we say we are, we're not who we want to be—we are the sum of the influence and impact that we have, in our lives, on others." And another reminder that brought him comfort during life's difficult seasons: "Even through your hardest days, remember we are all made of stardust." These words beautifully reflected the way Matthew lived—with humility, compassion, and an enduring belief that every life has the power to leave the world better than it found it.

Matthew was preceded in death by his beloved father, William O'Neil; his precious son, Declan O'Neil; and his brother, Michael O'Neil.

Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Kathleen Wilson O'Neil; his loving mother, Mary O'Neil; his beloved children, Malachi O'Neil, Aria O'Neil, and Milo O'Neil; his siblings, Scott and Christine O'Neil, Tracy O'Neil, Daniel O'Neil and Melissa Godin, Kathryn O'Neil and Matthew Tanner, Meredith and Scott Gooderham, Cullen and Olivia O'Neil, Grace and Logan Smith, and Linnae O'Neil and Nick Oliveri. He also leaves behind his cherished niece and nephew, Harvey Smith and Bridget Smith, along with many extended family members, dear friends, fellow educators, and all whose lives were enriched by his wisdom, kindness, creativity, and unwavering desire to make a meaningful difference.

A private family visitation will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Life and Legacy/Stephenson-Gaskin Chapel, located at 14617 Lawyers Road, Matthews, North Carolina 28104. A public visitation will take place on Friday, August 7, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m., followed by a Funeral Service beginning at 12:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Community of Charlotte, located at 234 North Sharon Amity Road, Charlotte, North Carolina 28211.

In keeping with Matthew's generous spirit and love for helping others, the family respectfully requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association. Matthew would have found great comfort in knowing that his memory continues to help improve and save the lives of others.
