Robert Alan Murphy, 96, was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus Thursday, November 30th in Monroe, NC. Born February 28, 1921 in Pittsburgh PA, he lived a life that honored the Lord. From 1942-1945, he faithfully served his country in World War II as a member of the Navy. Bob attended the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics and worked for Eastern Airlines 18 years before joining Wycliffe Bible Translators. Bob loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking the Appalachian Trail as well as camping with his wife and family. He was a talented woodcrafter and made musical instruments and many other beloved treasures. Bob handcrafted violins and dulcimers and was well know for his many talents. Robert is survived by his wife of 69 years, Gertrude Verma Murphy, sons Daniel Robert Murphy of Waxhaw, NC, son Timothy Alan Murphy (Lee Ann) of Fort Mill, SC, daughter Tamara Sue Murphy of Seattle, WA, six grandchildren James Murphy (Margaret), Becky Crognale (Richard), Jane Dorler (Mark), Benjamin Murphy (Sara), Brian Murphy (Joy), Neely Potts (Ben) and his 15 great-grandchildren. A graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, December 3rd, 2017 at the Southside Cemetery in Waxhaw, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to JAARS, a mission organization dedicated to Bible translation and language development www.jaars.org. - -
